"As a Progressive, I would------"

Found this on the net today:

Doug Van Gorder, a math teacher at Brockton High School, wrote this in a Letter to the Editor of the Boston Globe:

"Some propose overturning laws that made schools gun-free zones even for teachers who may be licensed to securely carry concealed firearms elsewhere. They argue that barring licensed-carry only ensures a defenseless, target-rich environment.

But as a progressive, I would sooner lay my child to rest than succumb to the belief that the use of a gun for self-defense is somehow not in itself a gun crime."

This pithy comeback by Mike Adams:

"Morally speaking, I have no problem with anti-gun ideologues who wish to place themselves in peril by waiving their rights of self-defense. You almost have to respect someone who is willing to die for his beliefs. But when he decides that others should also die for his beliefs the real trouble begins."

Shall we examine one thing ... this is a teacher with unrestricted access to children bringing this ideology into the classroom with him.

I wonder how that guy's child feels about this. Glad he isn't my dad.

TomD, do you have a link to that article?

From a progressive viewpoint, see how your state stacks up on gun laws. From the Brady Foundation: http://www.bradycampaign.org/stategunlaws

Oh gee, my state score only 6/100, the horror!

Doug Van Gorder is well known for his satire. Look at the content, he is pro-self defense, he just wont have his article published in the glob if he were overtly so.

Too funny!!

Here's the entire text of the letter. Some parts could be satire. What is the glob? I recognize blog backwards, a google search didn't turn up much.

Guns, teachers, and self-defense
December 28, 2009

I AM a math teacher at Brockton High School, the site of a school shooting earlier this month.

Current school security procedures lock down school populations in the event of armed assault. Some advocate abandoning this practice as it holds everyone in place, allowing a shooter easily to find victims.

An alternative to lockdown is immediate exodus via announcement. Although this removes potential hostages and makes it nearly impossible for the shooter to acquire preselected targets, it unfairly rewards resourceful children who move to safety off-site more shrewdly and efficiently than others.

Schools should level playing fields, not intrinsically reward those more resourceful. A level barrel is fair to all fish.

Some propose overturning laws that made schools gun-free zones even for teachers who may be licensed to securely carry concealed firearms elsewhere. They argue that barring licensed-carry only ensures a defenseless, target-rich environment.

But as a progressive, I would sooner lay my child to rest than succumb to the belief that the use of a gun for self-defense is somehow not in itself a gun crime.

The glob is what we affectionately call the Boston Globe. A crap rag.
The satire is exactly what you have emboldened. He uses the classic "progressive" lines to prominently display the lack of logic, reasoning and compassion in them. He is quite brilliant in that way.

My favorite line is "A level barrel is fair to all fish." As this is implying currently policies make school zones the same as "shooting fish in a barrel," he then continues to imply that instead of letting anyone flee to safety, the liberal agenda must be embraced to make all of the children "equal" victims.

We need to work on this in New Mexico. And we'd have a perfect score.

Quote:

Guns in Public Places and Local Control (Maximum 8 points)

No Guns in Workplace

  • Category Possible
    Points New Mexico
    Points
  • Employers not forced to allow firearms on premises 2 2
  • State Total 2
No Guns on College Campuses

  • Category Possible
    Points New Mexico
    Points
  • Colleges are not forced to allow firearms on campus 2 2
  • State Total 2

We are at least allowed to have them in the car anywhere. It's considered an extension of one's home.

California gets 79/100, the highest in the nation. I wonder how that's working out for the residents with the state having the highest murder rate in the nation and all?

Hell, even Massachusetts is only 54/100.

ooh, that is nifty data.

Make a map with crime rate overlayed with Bradycampaign.org scores...

I'll work on this later. I'm taking a BORING online training class right now.
